Eggcutterorchestra is a small sound installation that Hans Beckers developed during his Springcamp residency in Timelab (2012, Ghent Belgium). He investigated the different ways of playing the egg cutters; hereby-different types of motors pluck and stroke the strings of the egg cutters. In this installation each egg cutter is unique and collected on different journeys. Each egg cutter has it’s own sound, it’s own character and it’s own tonality. The interesting thing is that egg cutters are not tuned according to the standard key of 440Hz, but that each string is tuned accidental by cutting eggs during his life as an egg cutter. Hereby some of the strings are out of tune and used for microtonal music.
